About Gregory P. Joseph
Greg was a past President and Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He served as Chair of the 60,000-member Section of Litigation of the American Bar Association, and—by appointment of the Chief Justice—as a member of the Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Evidence. Greg was also Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Supreme Court Historical Society. Greg was recognized as a top litigator by Chambers, Top 100 Lawyers, New York Super Lawyers, and Best of the Best USA, among countless others.
Greg made many significant contributions to legal scholarship. As one United States District opinion wrote: “Greg is one of this country’s leading litigators” and “an extraordinarily prolific author in addition to maintaining an active law practice.” The United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit described him as “the leading authority on sanctions law.”
Greg authored Sanctions: The Federal Law of Litigation Abuse (6th ed. 2019; Supp. 2025); Civil RICO: A Definitive Guide (5th ed. 2018); and Modern Visual Evidence (1984; Supp. 2018). These books were recognized for their “meticulous[] analy[sis]” (106 Harv. L. Rev.1376) and as “the leading treatise on RICO” (Fortune, Sept. 29, 2008 at 135), and “the authoritative text” on visual evidence (Communication Arts, Sept./Oct. 1995 at 45). Greg also wrote more than 100 articles in professional journals. His books and articles have been cited in more than 300 judicial opinions, 500 professional journals and treatises, and in the Advisory Committee Notes to the Federal Rules of Evidence and Civil Procedure. Greg served on the Editorial Board of Moore’s Federal Practice (3rd ed.).
Greg lectured for the Federal Judicial Center and National Judicial College; at the Judicial Conferences of the First, Second, Third, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth and Ninth Circuits, U.S. Tax Court and U.S. Court of Claims; and at more than 200 professional conferences. He was an honors graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School (1975) and a member of the Council of the American Law Institute.
