It is easy to be critical of Paul Weiss’s deal with the Trump Administration. But moral grandstanding aside, the Firm did the right thing. Clients invest months and years, and large sums of money, in their law firms. Clients lose all of that when the firm cannot act, or act effectively, for them. Yes, there is a financial side to the deal. There is also a self-preservation aspect. And there is the fundamental issue of fidelity to clients. Even if the firm had gotten an injunction against the Executive Order and regained access to the courts, it would have been a pariah to the Administration and the firm's ability to act effectively in dealing with federal regulators would have been severely impaired. It is easy for the unthreatened to be intrepid. Paul Weiss did the right thing. /s/ Greg Joseph
